The knee contains cartilage, ligaments, tendons, muscles and joint surfaces, so different problems can create similar symptoms. Your symptoms, how they started and what makes them better or worse are all important when deciding what may be causing the problem.
Meniscal irritation or tears can cause pain, swelling, clicking or catching. Not all meniscal changes require surgery but a truly locked knee or significant trauma may need prompt medical assessment.
Osteoarthritis can cause pain, stiffness and reduced tolerance for activities such as walking, climbing stairs or spending longer periods on your feet. Management often focuses on maintaining strength, keeping the knee active and improving confidence with everyday activity. Hands-on treatment may also be used where appropriate to help with pain, stiffness and general comfort.

Your appointment will focus on how the knee is affecting you in everyday life; for example whether walking, stairs, sitting, getting up from a chair, running or sport seem to bring the symptoms on.

A significant injury with an inability to bear weight, a locked knee, rapid swelling after trauma, a hot and swollen joint, or new calf swelling; particularly with chest pain or breathlessness; all need medical assessment rather than routine osteopathic care.
