Imaging &
Onward Referral

Osteopathy is effective for a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions, but sometimes a clearer picture is needed before treatment can progress, or your symptoms may be better assessed by another healthcare professional.

Further investigation

When might imaging be recommended?

If your symptoms aren’t responding as expected, or if the nature of your complaint warrants a closer look, I may recommend referring you to your GP or a specialist for further investigation. The most common types of imaging that may be considered are:

X-ray

Useful for assessing joint spaces and detecting changes such as osteoarthritis or fractures.

MRI

Provides detailed images of soft tissues including muscles, tendons, ligaments, discs and nerves. A good quality MRI is often the most informative scan for spinal and joint complaints.

The next step

How onward referral works

Everyone’s situation is different, so the referral route is tailored to you. In general, there are two options: through the NHS via a referral to a GP, or a private specialist, which can sometimes be faster and more direct. Either way, I’ll explain the options clearly so you can make an informed decision about the right path for you.

Putting scan findings into context

Scan findings are most useful when considered alongside your symptoms, medical history and clinical examination. Imaging should support the clinical picture rather than be viewed in isolation, as scan findings do not always directly explain pain.

What happens next?

What happens next?

Imaging is most useful when it helps clarify the diagnosis or influences what happens next. Not every musculoskeletal problem requires an X-ray or MRI. If further investigation or referral would be helpful, I’ll explain why and discuss the most appropriate next step with you.

Further imaging

When an X-ray, MRI or another investigation may help clarify the clinical picture or guide what happens next.

Onward referral

When another healthcare professional or specialist is better placed to investigate, assess or manage the problem.
If either is recommended, I’ll explain why, discuss the available options and help you understand the next step.
